JOYCE GORDON

Joyce Gordon has been at the heart of Oakland’s vibrant arts community for nearly two decades. Before she opened the Joyce Gordon Gallery in 2003, she owned three hair salons in the San Francisco Bay Area and published a book on hairstyling. Soon her work as a platform artist and educator, demonstrating new haircutting techniques, took her around the country. While traveling, Gordon took every opportunity to visit art galleries wherever she went. And when her children grew up and left home, she decided to open an art gallery of her own.

Her gallery nestled in the center of downtown Oakland, off 14th and Franklin, has been the scene of international photo concepts and exhibitions by emerging artist, book signings, poetry readings as well as music and film events.

Indeed, the gracious, and elegant Joyce has survived in an industry with an ever-changing market as unpredictable as fashion trends. And it’s all due to her deep seeded love for the power of Art in the community. With a 20- year milestone approaching, her vision remains the same, creating a space where art is accessible to all, be they seasoned collectors or curious teenagers.
